We interrupt this blog to bring you a special news report.
My internet connection has been transferred back to its original owners. I have applied for a new connection which hopefully will be up and running withing the next 10 working days.
For your information, getting internet set up here is a pain.
Initial phone line connection fee costs AUD300. Phone line rental prices differ from plan to plan. I got the Homeline Budget plan so I pay AUD20/month.
After that I applied for broadband. There are about 200-300 different ISPs to choose from. Another thing the really annoys me is that Australian broadband services employ a quota system where by each account has a certain download limit. There are about 3 ISPs that have truly unlimited plans but a lot of people complain because of poor connection speeds, slow pings, interruptions and stuff like that.
After careful consideration I have decided to go with and ISP called Internode. It’s probably the most used ISP in australia at the moment. The plan I chose is 1.5Mbps down 256kbps up connection with an 80GB quota.
How much does it cost??? AUD120/month!!! …and AUD130 setup fee.
What happens when you exceed your quota??? The ISP does something fun to your connection. It’s known as "shaping" or "throttling". I dunno why its called that but basically you internet connection speed gets capped at 64kbps.
Thats a TCO of AUD570 just to get online!!!
I hope to be online soon so I can amuse you with my awesome blog posts.
Til then, chiao!
